We all have a past. Some of it good, some of it not so good. Some things we want to remember. Some things we want to forget. And why not? Some things were hurtful and caused pain. But it’s in our pain where growth happens.

Bodybuilders have a saying “no pain, no gain”. What they are referring to is the tearing down of old muscles in order to build them into larger, stronger, more defined muscles. Making the sacrifice by putting in the work; hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. Even when they don’t feel like it. Consistency is the key to achieving what they are attaining to gain.

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.

—Alice Walker

Growth comes by consistently working out the issues and working through the pain even though it hurts. With bodybuilding, like life, it isn’t a matter of if you will feel pain, it’s a matter of when. You gain wisdom by learning how to navigate those times. Learning what the issues were. Learning what caused it. And finally, learning how to correct it.

You will get sick again, it’s inevitable. Without the memory of the lessons learned from your past you subject yourself to relive what you could have avoided in your future.

By erasing the memory or choosing to forget it, you also erase the cure. The cure comes not from hiding the memory but from embracing it. By owning it. By standing on it, but not in it. Acknowledging it existed keeps it in the forefront. It keeps the conversation alive. It reminds you of what you have to do in order to continue on to your desired destination.

I was or have been:

  • Abandoned as a child, twice.
  • Homeless, and I’m not speaking of sleeping on someone’s couch. Homeless as in no physical place to lay my head down at an early age.
  • Sent to prison.
  • Divorced, gone bankrupt, been broke, and alone.

These things helped make me who I am today, which is why I choose never to forget them or pretend they didn’t happen. They happened, and I am better for it today because I refused to let it define me or shape my identity and chose to change my future and the future of everyone around me.

You have that choice as well. You can choose to ignore your past and pretend it never happened. Erase it from your memory. Out of sight out of mind. But by forgetting the past, you also forget the lessons you learned from it. It’s in your pain where growth happens. Just ask a bodybuilder.  The past reminds you of where you don’t want to go, ever again!

Your past has the potential to strengthen you. It was your training for your future. You have the power to use it. To learn from it. Learning what the issues were. Learning what caused it. And finally, learning how to correct it.

Stand from the highest place in your story, not in the thick of it, and certainly not from the bottom.
